Grenache
This fabulous grape variety is at the heart of all Southern Rhone reds (whereas Syrah is at the heart of all Northern Rhone reds). Soft, sweet and richly fruity, it is perfectly capable of greatness, with structure and finesse, when yields are low and the vine old. Wines produced vary from intense, perfumed or herb and spice infused Chateauneuf, such as Bois de Boursan or Clos du Caillou to fresh, easy drinking but elegant Espiers Cotes du Rhone. It's usually blended with a little Syrah or Mourvedre (or Cinsaut and in Chateauneuf a number of exotic others) to add structure and complexity. An increasing number of great producers in the Southern Rhone are producing wines as great as any anywhere else and The Vine's list is rich with the best.
